Helena | Dothan Alabama Portrait Photography

Making this little lady look beautiful was not a difficult task. We embarked on this mini session around 6am in downtown Dothan because my schedule was getting full and Helena was getting ready to leave for a month to Denmark. We had a really sweet time enjoying the golden sunrise, which is a rare event for me (and other artists, I assume? Why are we all such night owls?) What piercing eyes on such a gentle face, right? She is all that is glamor without one ounce of effort.

Vintage Tea Party | Little Women

Oh I can hardly stand how cute these photos are! It killed me to even wait a day before posting but here I am, 48 hours later, showing off two of the sweetest and charming little ladies I know. (And I’m not being bias, even though they are family). After brainstorming with my talented mother, we were able to stylize this vintage tea party and dress the girls in MY hand sewn dresses from childhood. Essential props included my mother’s beautiful and supposedly quite expensive tea set which required delicate little hands, exchanged glances of silliness, whispered secrets, and a pair of my hot pink wedges. This is truly some of my favorite work to date, and I know I say that a lot, but I mean it!

Waddell Family | Rosemary Beach Family Photography

What a joy to mix business with travel! I got all pumped up when Stacie asked me to drive down to Rosemary Beach, FL, a humble 1.5 hour trip, and photograph her family while they were on vacation. I’ve known Stacie since I was a little girl, so it was neat to come down and see everyone and meet her children. This family radiates with adorable. So much fun.

Sydney + Senior Glam

Sydney and I spent two rainy afternoons taking some very natural but glamourous photos in and around rural Dothan. The clouds kept a blanket between us and the scorching sun which helped us keep our cool and have a good time without sweating to death. Sydney was a trooper, carrying an essence of natural beauty and presenting it so well on and off camera. And I know I say this a lot, she was also so ridiculously EASY to photograph!

Colleen + Radiant

Man oh man, I had no idea how busy one summer could be! Being back in Alabama is so different from my home in Switzerland because of all the things to do and the people to see. Time has passed so quickly because of it, and now here I am a month late on posting my summer sessions. Tis the season to take lots of photos! I’ve finally had some time to post some of my favorites from Colleen’s Vanity Fair themed golden hour session taken in June. Personally speaking, this is some of my favorite work to date, and I have Colleen and the sun to thank for that.

Caleb + Rebecca | Pure Romance

“Oh on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
so soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
the smiles that win, the tints that glow
but tell of days in goodness spent,
a mind at peace with all below,
a heart whose love is innocent!”
– Lord Byron

The light and the heat were both boiling the sweat on our brows, but I still couldn’t help but feel amorous after working with these two. I don’t mind this Alabama heat as long as I can escape to some AC after a hard few hours with the sun blazing. What blows me away is when a couple is trump enough to withstand it and still look glamorous. These photos look like they were taken somewhere in California. Caleb and Rebecca had such a sweet presence and I’m thrilled they allowed me to come into their life for a couple of hours and capture some of that sweet intimacy you share with each other.

Ilona | Golden Portraits

I kept repeating in my head “Don’t shoot with the 50,” before leaving to make family and personal photos for Ilona. It was a beautifully warm day, and I wanted to try something new. I have an amazing portrait lens that I never use, so instead of shooting everything on my nifty fifty, which is was I LOVE to do because you can hardly beat the 1.8 depth of field, I decided to pull out my 80-200 and see what happened. I felt very comfortable shooting with the heavy thing since I had lots of practice borrowing this lens in college. The results, the bokeh, the lighting, the depth of field, were all great! I love my fifty, but it may be going on a break for a while. It was fun to lay on the ground and shoot through the hay and thistles to get these gorgeous golden shots. And Ilona… can I just say, “wow!” This is just a sneak peak, though, so make sure to come back for more of luminous Ilona and her awesome family in a few days.

Corinne and her Sunshine

Covered in a smile, outstanding at singing (I’m talking about a voice so powerful the first time I heard her, my heart almost leapt out of my chest.. with a “cry-your-face-off-at-the-Italian-opera” kind of voice) incredible wife and mother, a fluent Swiss-German speaker and a good friend, this is Corinne. She’s another American living in Winterthur and the little one running around in some of the pictures is Trixibelle, her first daughter.

With the trees blooming and color sprouting up everywhere, I found it appropriate and exciting to celebrate the beauty of the new life growing in Corinne. She is due any moment with her second daughter, so we took the afternoon to casually make some pictures and document her expanded belly. Pregnancy looks so good on her!

I not only wanted to celebrate the new addition due to arrive any day, but I wanted to show a little about Corinne as a mother and as the sensitive, colorful, and alive woman she is!

pigeons on the gate

Roger, Lajescha, Rebecca, Simon, Jérémie, and Isabelle. This is Pigeons on the Gate. Traditional and original Irish folk music that speaks softly and carries a big stick. This is what happens when talented people, who don’t take themselves too seriously, come together and do what they do best: play. These are some promo photos from a shoot we did a couple days ago. Shooting bands is something I really enjoy because it combines the worlds of music and photography, two things I happen to love doing.

You can see them play live 11:00AM Saturday, April 10th, My Place in Zürich, or visit their website at  http://www.myspace.com/pigeonsonthegate.

a morning with christelle

Below are some of my favorite shots from my session with the talented and lovely Christelle. She was born in France but is now living in Winterthur, Switzerland. She came to me about doing a photoshoot of her and I just about jumped out of my seat for the opportunity. I knew a little of her powerful jazz voice from her work with Soma Sonic, which is luscious and beat-induced music, guaranteed to get you moving, and her harp-playing. She teaches music and voice lessons at the same school as my husband, so we knew each other a little bit before meeting on this cold February morning. You can listen to her here and see her face on the cover of the “Simplicity” album. “Simplicity” by Soma Sonic is also available on Itunes… and I’m telling you, it’s really great stuff.

I’m sure you can see why I was so excited to get these up for the world to see. These images tell such a beautiful story about who she is as a musician and a strong woman, comfortable in her own skin. She played the harp and sang in the middle of a public sidewalk and it was as if we were the only two people in the world.

the brilliant naemi

“New” is the word of the day. Other words like, “waiting” and “frigid cold” have also frequented my vocabulary as of late, so while I wait and take baby steps, I continue with what I know: photographing people. It is not ideal to work with someone in uncomfortable weather conditions, for the subject or for the shooter, but when the weather is never anything but uncomfortable, and a photo must be made, then in the snow we go. This photo-shoot was spontaneous and fun! White on white can be magic in itself, so I set out to use my surroundings to my advantage. The snow will melt in a month, the trees with bombard us with color, and I’m certain this blog will be overflowing with delicious photo goodies and sunshine! However, as most artists find ways to make something from not much, right now I have to work with what I’ve got.

These are a few shots from my portrait session with Naemi, a beautiful and dear friend of mine who not only shines brilliantly on camera, but adds a certain luminance to my life as well. People like her make being a photographer easy and joyous. Thank you Naemi for a tremendous time and for these beautiful, radiant images that speak of your soul.
